One-step at a time Lucius descended the marble staircase that would lead him into the extravagant foyer of Malfoy Manor. Crossing the marble foyer, the Manor quiet except for the swishing of his long black wizard robe as it flowed about his ankles. The smell of coffee in the air, a welcome aroma as Lucius drew in a deep breath. Today he would make his usual rounds at the Ministry and St. Mungo‘s, maybe see if he could get Barty Crouch, Sr. to discuss Ministry matters. Nay, Cornelius Fudge over a goblet of red currant rum. That would do the trick and good ole long time family friend Cornelius would have a lot to spill with a few under his belt. Lucius couldn’t help but smirk at the thought.
The sunlight in the solarium was a warm greeting as Lucius pulled out a chair to take a seat at the table in the center of the room. Large glass windows looked out over just one of the many gardens on the estate. The leaves just starting to show a tinge of color before they lost their life and dropped to the ground dried and shriveled. Before the thought had even cleared his mind, Dobby was at Lucius’ side in a low bow. Steaming coffee in his cup and the Daily Prophet laid out in front of him, Lucius looked to the house elf.
“Out of my sight, NOW!”
The elf dressed in dirty worn rags scurried back to the kitchen. Lucius took a drink of coffee, enjoying the warmth and strong flavor to end the buzz in his head from the night before. A congratulatory party with the finest Ale and the prettiest women is what Lucius’ mates had thrown him on the news that he was nominated to the Governing Board of Hogwarts. Now all that was needed was the vote and it was already bought and paid for. Lucius couldn’t be happier, another rung in the ladder to power completed. He lifted the china coffee cup to his lips and took a sip as he looked at his own moving picture on the front of the Prophet confirming what he celebrated last night.

Narcissa walked in to the solarium, her head held high and her long dress swaying around her ankles. She noticed Lucius sitting at the table reading his paper and drinking a strong smelling coffee, he had been out late last night and nothing that would be reported in the prophet would faze her. "Morning Lucius, is there anything to report to me about your night last night?"
She knew that there really was no great love between them any more, that had died when they where at school and she had mucked up big time on their first wedding day. Narcissa also knew that her husband had a liking for other woman, and even though they where married and trying for children, Lucius had not changed his way.
She sat in the chair opposite, looking at his face. At one time she would have loved for him to only be devoted to her, now she did not care. Dobby arrived at that moment with juice and some tea, she was not allowed to have her fix of coffee any more. "Thank you and now get out of here."

The sound of high heels clicking on the marble floor of the foyer was distraction enough to draw Lucius from the article he was reading in the Prophet. Damn. This was what he hoped to miss this morning. Obviously he had lingered too long at the manor for now Narcissa was entering the solarium.
Morning Lucius, is there anything to report to me about your night last night
Slowly Lucius closed the paper and folded it in half letting it drop to the table top. He lifted the steaming cup of coffee letting his lips rest momentarily against the white china cup before taking a swig and swallowing.
“Report to you?” His eyes lifted, hard and cold piercing hers. “Unless I’m mistaken there is only one I need to report my whereabouts or actions to, and you are not him.” Just who the hell did she think she was! He had no intentions letting her be privy to anything he did. All she is, is an ornament on his arm when out in public and that is all she will ever be.
Lucius sat the cup back on the saucer and watched Narcissa pull the chair out opposite him and sit down at the table. Dobby was there in a flash with her simple breakfast consisting of tea and fresh juice. She curtly dismissed the house elf but not before Dobby turned to look at his master’s cup. Lucius waved the house elf off. He would finish what coffee was left and head to the Ministry not wanting to be under Narcissa’s scrutinizing thumb nail.
The silence seemed to close in around them as Lucius finished his coffee. “We are expected at dinner tonight with Cornelius Fudge. You will be decked in your finery, we will leave promptly at six forty-five.” He leaned back in his chair crossing his arms over his chest half expecting her to balk at the engagement. She knew better. Lucius could make her life a living hell if she even thought of being disobedient.

Narcissa listened to Lucius, a look of displeasure upon her lips and eyes rolling. She had heard this rant about the dark lord so often that it bored her, at one time the only person he answered to was his mother and father. "Fine Lucius be that way, all I wanted to know was there anything I would have to defend you against with to my mother and father. Though if you want them to see some cheap tart hanging around your neck in the gossip section, then that is fine by me."
She nearly threw her hot cup of tea when he made his final announcement, she hated having to spend time with the Fudges. With a glair, she looked back at him hatefully. "Fine, I will be ready on time but if he so much as lays a hand on me, I will hex him. I do not like being felt up by that man when his wife is near, it is such a muggle thing to do."
After finishing of her juice she raised, starting toward the door. Turning she crossed her arms over her chest, looking at Lucius. "So is there any colour you want to see me in? and what jewels and I permitted to wear."

Disdain did not suit Narcissa’s facial features at all well and Lucius would not tolerate her childish banter over his last evening excursion. Business always came before anything else, even if Narcissa thought business included the female persuasion. He sat forward eyes narrowing on Narcissa as he held her firm in his gaze. A hand pushed the Daily Prophet across the smooth surface of the table in Narcissa’s direction. “Discretion on my part is and always will be taken highly unlike your misgivings that always seem to come back and twist the dagger in my back.” Lucius folded his hands on the table in front of him, “Therefore I do not nor do I need you to defend me or my honor to your parents!”
Lucius could be bitter and cruel and Narcissa had just stepped in the line of fire. It was not love he felt for her, that diminished several years past. Too many lies, too many deceptions on both their parts. At Fudge’s name hate flared in her eyes little creases etched around her deep blue eyes along with a slight flare to her nostrils. Oh, that was amusing as a twitch curled at the corner of his mouth. “You will do no such thing, so leave your wand behind.” How he wanted to say she should be use to hands of all contingents on her, but he bit back the retort. “This is business, my nomination to the Governing Board of Hogwarts. So be on your best behavior.”
Narcissa rose from the table, the feet of the chair made an obnoxious screech against the solarium floor that made Lucius tighten his jaw against the pounding in his head. At her question his words came so quick and clear in his mind, anything to keep you from being the cheap tart hanging on my arm. For some reason he could not utter those words to hurt her more then he already had. “Whatever pleases you Narcissa. The jewels are for your comfort and wealth as well so wear them at will. And if none please you then by all means shop.” He drew his wallet from the breast pocket of his black wizard robe. Taking out a Gringott’s draft, he signed it and laid it on the table next to the Prophet.

Narcissa stopped at stared at Lucius, he always liked to throw those two mistakes at her. It shouldn't have hurt the way it did still, but coming from his mouth and then her sisters always killed her inside. "I was discreet with one of them, if you remember. No one knew including you, that was until mother found out when I was in hospital. The other Lucuis, was not entirely my fault now was it?"
She stalked back to the table, looking Lucius in the eye. "Fine, I will not defend you to them. Seeing though by the looks of it, father or uncle was most likely there. As for leaving my wand home, you have to be dreaming, no witch or wizard leaves the house wandless these days and I refuse to be caught with out it. Though I will be on my best behavior for your father."
Narcissa rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms again, the dislike building more for her husband. "Put that away Lucuis, I don't want or need your money. What I have is fine to be seen out in, there is nothing in my wardrobe that will make me out as the cheap tart you seem to think I am. "

{{you might want to re-read the last paragraph for Lucius never said aloud that she was a cheap tart, he only thought it. Anyhow back to the rp LOL}}
He wasn’t about to get into yet another argument about her deceptions or lack of trusting him. She had made her point on more than one occasion when she would leave and not tell him where she was going or when her expected return would be. The one that hurt the most was when she left to only miscarry his child and she returned only to dismiss him and the incident like it was nothing in the library their 7th year at Hogwarts. That had hurt him more than anything else she had done, that is when he started losing faith in her. Sad thing is he’s not sure if they will ever regain the trusting relationship they once had at Hogwarts. It seems so long ago.
Narcissa stalked back to the table where Lucius sat, stating she would not defend him to her side of the family. “They were in attendance along with other prominent witches and wizards. Which is why I did nothing that you would think distasteful.” Lucius rose from the chair that he was seated in to stand next to Narcissa. “When are you going to realize I am not a 7th year from Hogwarts? I am Lucius Abraxas Malfoy, respected and loyal to the Dark Lord and family. You should walk by my side the dutiful wife you are. Never to question my intentions or motives.”
At that moment Dobby strolled in the solarium, silver service tray balanced on one hand. As the house elf closed in on the table to refresh both the cups of tea and coffee Lucius raised his arm swatting the serving tray from the elf’s hand. In the midst of clatter as the tray hit the floor Lucius roared, “Leave us!” The house elf scurried to clean the mess. Lucius loosing his patience stalked the servant. “I said LEAVE US!” He raised his hand and smacked the elf, Dobby slid on the slick floor his back coming in contact with the wall. The elf moaned and jumped to his feet before hustling from the room.

{{ I put it in there because I thought she might have picked it up from a fight they had at one time}}
She stepped back from Lucuis as he stood beside her, just encase he decided to hit her for talking back. "When you stop treating me as if I am nothing, I am also a person Lucius. I am Narcissa Black Malfoy, loyal to the purest of wizarding families. Yes I have made mistakes and I have paid for them twice over, but I am still paying for them from you aren't I?"
She watched his tell the house elf off, then smacked him so that he slid across the floor. She turned her back not wanting to watch, her stomach was playing up and she didn't know how to tell Lucius the reason why. When she heard Dobby leave the room she turned back to Lucius, taking a deep breath she decided the truth would be best.
"Lucius, I ... I have failed you again in the dutiful wife department, the reason why I was not in our marital bed this morning was because I was at St Mungo's. I had just arrived home when I entered, you can contact the maternity ward and talk to the Malfoy family healer. I.... I am sorry that I failed you again." with that she started to walk from the room.

Cold grey eyes tracked the house elf as it ran from the room. The jackhammer in his head was working overtime and another fight with Narcissa so was not what he wanted. Lucius could agree on part of her statement. Yes she was Narcissa Black loyal to the Black side of her family however could she truthfully say she was loyal to him, Lucius Malfoy? That thought and a dead dog would buy him all the loyalty he deserved from her. She was not the only one at fault, it took two to make and break a relationship.
Fact is Lucius had just stopped trying. In the beginning he truly loved Narcissa, even meant every vow he spoke on their wedding day. And if one were to ask what happened to their marriage, Lucius would just shrug not even sure himself what had gone a bust. Perhaps his drive for power and success forced a wedge between them. Lord knows it’s not the wealth for Narcissa likes the precious stones on her neck and fingers the slide of luscious fabrics over her skin. If he could push the bitterness and past anger away Lucius may truly see Narcissa for the caring person she is.
When Narcissa spoke his name, Lucius turned taking in the profile features of his wife. Puzzled, Lucius narrowed his brows unable to take his eyes from the side of her face. St. Mungo’s …. Maternity ward …. Family healer…. It was as if he’d been struck in the gut and as usual she was going to walk away from him yet again. That was her classic move, strike and leave. Not this time! Lucius’ hand reached out his fingers clamping around her wrist, the strength of his arm pulling her around to face him as he clutched tightly to her wrist not letting go.
“You talk of loyalty, wife. Want my respect. Then you bloody well tell me what you are speaking of, not throw at me to talk with the family healer.” For the first time in ages his voice was not a menacing hiss but held concern as his eyes softened.

Narcissa jumped when Lucius grabbed her, it was the first time for this to happen. In all the fights or disagreements they had, had he had never grabbed her like this. She inhaled, then let it spill out. "I was expecting your child again, but as the failure of a wife I am, I miscarried last night. They think I was two months along and are trying to work out the reason why I could not keep it, I am sorry."
She turned away as she felt tears starting to gather in her eyes, there was no way she was going to let him see how much she was hurting.
Though it was hard because he still had her arm, she swiped quickly at her eyes then turned back to Lucius. " Your hurting my arm Lucius, let go now and I will sit back down and talk if that is what you want.'

I was expecting your child again, but as the failure of a wife I am, I miscarried last night
Lucius was stunned. His grip loosening on her wrist, but not enough to let her go for he again pulled her back to him. Her eyes red with the tears she swiped away and the ones she refused to let fall in front of him. Was he that much of an arse that she refused to break down especially in front of him, over the loss of their child. His hand left her wrist to lightly touch under Narcissa’s chin tilting her head up so he could look into her eyes. “You are not a failure.” Lucius’ words were but a soft whisper before his lips gently brushed over hers, his arms wrapping around her in comfort.
The flashbacks to the Library hit him hard as he rested a cheek against Narcissa’s temple while holding her. She was already in bed when he arrived at the Manor last evening. Yet again she did not tell him. Not one word before she left for St. Mungo’s. Not one word while she was at St. Mungo’s. No Patronus sent in an emergency to summon him. Just like before she had left him out of a family situation that he should have been involved in.
Lucius let out a sigh and released the comforting hold he had given Narcissa. “I am sorry.” Words spoken from his heart. That was all he could say, all he could do for being left out. Would she ever let him close, that wall always seemed to be between them. Lucius walked around Narcissa, on his way from the solarium he knelt down and picked up the silver tray and both the silver tea and coffee service. As Lucius sat them on the side bar he glanced at Narcissa, she was hurting for the loss of the baby and he was hurting for their loss of each other.

Narcissa was shocked when Lucius pulled her in closer to him, then gently lifted her chin. She looked into his eyes as he spoke some of the words she longed to hear more than anything else in the world, her eyes closing though her lips opened a little as he brushed them with his own. She felt as if they could get over every thing together when he wrapped her in his arms, even if she couldn't bring her arms up complete the embrace.
When he released her from the embrace she craved, her head dropped and the tears slowly fell. "So am I Lucius.." She did not move or follow him, as he moved around her to pick up the the tea and coffee service. Her heart was aching over both of her loses; the lose of Lucius and the lose of another of their babies.
With her back to where Lucius had been, not knowing if he was there or not, she continued with the rest of what she was going to say before. "So am I Lucius, I am sorry that I have not been able to keep any of your children. My heart breaks each time that I lose our babies, I also wish I had never listened to mother when she said it was a females duty to keep theses things from her husband."
Slowly she walked over to look out the solarium's window, going over the first time she had heard her mother say those words. It was when one of her sisters had lost their baby, her heart ached even more when her mother said it to her. She did not want to leave the house today or any day, but she would for Lucius.

Across the foyer in the study, Lucius just finished sealing a post with green wax and the Malfoy family insignia. As he ran his fingers over the heavy parchment, covering the note inside all he could see was the pain in Narcissa’s eyes. He knew she would put on the most lavish dress she owned bedeck herself in exquisite jewels and be the most elegant escort on his arm tonight. She would do it for him, be miserable the whole evening.
Walking out into the foyer Lucius tossed the post in the usual spot for outgoing owls. Just one small part of the house elf chores will be to send it off this morning. Lucius looked back into the solarium from the foyer, his gaze caught Narcissa silhouetted in front of one of the large windows. Her thoughts seemed lost in the garden outside the pane of glass.
The front door shut with a click behind Lucius as he stepped out onto the columned porch of the Manor. He drew in the crisp cool morning air, filling his lungs and the chill covering his skin under the blackness of his robes. There would be a change in this mornings routine, he needed a drink stronger than coffee. Lucius always thought of himself as a tall and proud man yet in just the few moments he had spent with Narcissa she made him small and crumpled. Pulling his shoulders up and his head held high Lucius walked off the porch apparating from the Manor.

Narcissa heard the door click shut after a bit, her heart sinking as low as what she was feeling. When she turned Dobby was there cleaning up the last of the mess, he bowed and asked if there was any thing she wanted. "I want nothing, I am going to our room. I do not want to be disturbed for any one, do you hear me? If I am you will pay." she watched him nod a understanding, then walked from the room.
After climbing the stairs and slowly making her way to the wing that Lucius and herself lived in, she closed the door and locked it. Moving as if in a trace she made her way to the bed, she crawled up to her side grabbing the pillow Lucius used and cried until she fell asleep.
